1.   Select your bank

You should select the bank you would like to open a bank account online in. You should choose a bank that provides you with a good interest rate and services. You should check that the bank ATMs and branches are easily available in your area and spread evenly across the country. This makes it easier to find the nearest bank branch in case of a bank-related emergency. You should compare various banks available to you and choose the bank that suits you the best.

2.   Fill in your information

After choosing your bank, you should visit the website or the mobile app of the bank. You would need to click the ‘open a new account’ option on the website. You should fill in information such as name, age, contact details, etc. You should fill in the information correctly while filling up the form to avoid any inconvenience after you open a bank account online. This information would be then saved in the database of the bank.

3.   Submit a soft copy of necessary documents

You would be asked to submit a few documents for your identity and address proof. You could submit any government-issued documents such as AADHAAR card, PAN card, driving license, etc. as these proofs. You need to mandatorily submit your PAN card or ‘Form 16A’, which is a document submitted by your employer stating that TDS is deducted from your salary.  You would not be able to open a bank account online without submitting these documents.

4.   Complete the video KYC process

The video KYC is a relatively new process required when you open a bank account online. You would be asked to switch on the camera of the device you are using. You should allow the app to use the camera of the device when asked. This process does not take long and is generally completed within 2-5 minutes. This is the last step of opening your bank account online.

5.   Receive the welcome kit

After opening your bank account online, the bank would send you a welcome kit including your debit/credit card, passbook, chequebook and all the necessary documents via courier within the next 10-15 working days. This welcome kit would also include your customer ID and passwords. You should change the PIN of your account immediately and not share this confidential information with anyone.
